I am a social studies teacher and in my classrooms, from the start of 2009, I wanted to focus on the importance of the United Nations in leading the world peace movement. A Model United Nations was conducted within seven classrooms, with approximately 300 high school freshmen taking part. Students discussed the issue of nuclear weapons as ambassadors of various countries and presented how they could work toward their elimination.
I believe that the starting point is to create a society where it is a given that a culture of peace can in fact be created and that dialogue can cut open a path to a resolution—an idea central to the United Nations. I see it as my challenge to teach students the importance of the United Nations, and to help them find their own personal missions toward peace.
