India Not to Give Up Nuclear Arms till Universal Disarmament

Making it clear it will not give up nuclear arms until universal disarmament is achieved, India on Tuesday said the weapons had ended attempts by global powers to blackmail it to toe a particular line. "Nuclear weapons today are integral part of our national security and will remain so, pending non-discriminatory and global nuclear disarmament," External Affairs Minister SM Krishna said.

Disarmament hasn't gotten much attention from the presidential candidates, but some surprising progress has been made in the effort to reduce the quantity of nuclear-weapons materials so that they don't fall into the hands of irresponsible governments or terrorist groups. Artists, activists and politicians attended a peace picnic at the Meersbrook Park Walled Garden to remember the 67th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The picnic was organised by Sheffield Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and the Meersbrook Park User’s Trust to remember the hundreds of thousands of civilians killed in 1945 and to highlight concerns about the threat of nuclear weapons in today's world.

The long-serving Labor foreign minister - and the man Kevin Rudd asked three years ago to generate international momentum for nuclear disarmament - has also conceded ''the spirit of optimism'' has largely evaporated from attempts to rid the world of the bomb.
