The United States urged a reluctant Russia yesterday to engage in talks to extend a programme that has helped disarm thousands of ex-Soviet nuclear warheads and missiles. Russian officials said this week that they had notified Washington that the Nunn-Lugar programme, due to expire in May 2013, would not be extended, in the latest challenge to a vaunted "reset" of US relations with the Kremlin.

Global powers launch new push to end Iran nuclear crisis

Six global powers will launch a diplomatic drive after the US elections aimed at defusing the Iranian nuclear crisis in the next few months and avoiding the eruption of a new Middle East conflict next year. A "reformulated" proposal will offer limited relief from existing sanctions and other incentives for Iran to limit the level of enrichment of its uranium stockpile.

A U.S. envoy on arms control said a ban on fissile material was necessary for nuclear disarmament, though critics said the demands were lopsided. Officials met at U.N. headquarters to address a committee on disarmament and international security. U.S. Acting Undersecretary for Arms Control and International Security Rose Gottemoeller said Washington was working with other nuclear-power states on a comprehensive ban on fissile material.

Russia says it won't renew US disarmament agreement

Russia said today it would not automatically renew a 20-year disarmament agreement with the United States when it expires next year, the Washington Post reported. The 1992 Cooperative Threat Reduction Program, which was initiated by US Senators Sam Nunn and Richard Lugar, was set up to help Russia and former Soviet republics dismantle nuclear and chemical weapons after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.
