On January 28, the Soka Gakkai's Nagasaki Prefecture Youth Peace Committee hosted a peace lecture in Nagasaki City.

Dr. Hiromichi Umebayashi, founder and senior advisor of Peace Depot, a non-profit organization based in Yokohama, lectured on how to actualize a nuclear weapon free world.

In his talk, Dr. Umebayashi spoke about how the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster that followed the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami in Japan, awakened people to the risk of radiation. He stressed that the idea of nuclear power plants being secure is a myth. He emphasized that the only way to remove the risk of nuclear weapons is to abolish such weapons entirely. He also emphasized the need for people to raise their voices, promote awareness of the dangers of nuclear weapons and for civil society to rally together behind this cause.

On April 1, 2012, Nagasaki University will open a research center focused on ridding the world of nuclear weapons headed by Dr. Umebayashi. He currently serves as a member of the Middle Powers Initiative (MPI) international steering committee, an initiative involving international NGOs that aims to build bridges between governments toward nuclear abolition.
