The executive director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) has described the threat to humanity posed by nuclear weapons as "greater today than at the end of the Cold War". There are currently nine states known to possess nuclear arsenals, adding up to an estimated total of around 15,000 warheads. Those countries are the UK, the USA, Russia, France, China, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea, with Russia and the USA holding by far the biggest stockpiles at around 7,000 apiece.
